Accabonac Harbor Update December 2019
I am writing to let you know about two recent developments that will affect Accabonac Harbor. The first is a conditional shellfishing program in the northern section of Accabonac Harbor. The second development is modifications to the Town code that we hope will accelerate the installation of low nitrogen septic systems near Accabonac Harbor.
Shellfishing in the northern section of Accabonac Harbor
The NYS DEC-Bureau of Shellfisheries in cooperation with the Town of East Hampton will initiate a rainfall related conditional shellfishing program in a portion of uncertified (closed) shellfish lands in Accabonac Harbor. This area, which runs from 128 Gerard Drive to the orange marker on the opposite western shore, has been closed to shellfishing for many years.
Thanks fo the Trustees for their focus on Accabonac Harbor, with special thanks to Trustees John Aldred and Bill Taylor who have worked with the DEC on the sample collection (sometimes under harsh conditions) needed to support the conditional program. The program is scheduled to run from December 18, 2019 through April 30, 2020. Rainfall must not exceed 0.45 inches in the preceding 7 days. Since we’ve had rain lately, Trustee Aldred advises the opening date could be delayed.
The Trustees will make the determination of the status each day based on rainfall amounts. Harvesters in the conditional area must call 631-324-6393 for a recorded message of the daily status.
If you do collect any shellfish when the conditional program begins, please let John Aldred know what you find; clams, scallops, etc. They would appreciate that!
The East Hampton Town Board voted to amend the Town Code regarding Low Nitrogen Septic Systems
We can see the water table near Accabonac Harbor is high, potentially increasing the negative impacts of the old systems. With these changes, we are hopeful more homeowners will decide to install low nitrogen systems near Accabonac Harbor.
A building permit will no longer be required to replace an existing septic with a low nitrogen septic system.
The payment from the Town will change from a rebate to direct payment from the Town to the Contractor and/or reimbursement to the homeowner.
Call the East Hampton Town Department of Natural Resources for details and application. 631-324-0496
My best,
Patrice Dalton, President
Accabonac Protection Committee
