Accabonac Harbor: Mosquito Larvae Treatment Scheduled

The Suffolk County Department of Public Works’ Division of Vector Control plans to treat parts of the specific marshes by helicopter to control mosquito larvae.  List of marshes to be treated includes Accabonac Harbor, Lazy Point and Beach Hampton.  Should weather conditions prevent completion of the work, it will be continued on the next suitable day. Methoprene is currently used to spray our wetlands, including Accabonac Harbor for nuisance mosquitos. It is harmful to life in the harbor, including crustaceans.  The Senate bill, sponsored by Senator Kenneth LaValle, is in the Environmental Conservation committee chaired by Senator Kaminsky. Mosquito Sampling Results

First sampling of the 2019 season. John Aldred summarized “Over 1100 data points, 143 with larvae. Some limited treatment will be needed in the northern area, but nowhere else.” See red circled areas on map. Rare purple pearl found in Accabonac clam

Alex Miller found this purple pearl the size of a large pea in an Accabonac Harbor clam he purchased at Stuart’s Seafood in Amagansett. He brought it to The East Hampton Star office for a look.
