As we settle into winter with its darkening days and colder temperatures, the pristine beauty of Accabonac Harbor shines more brilliantly than ever.  Described as a rare and irreplaceable ecosystem, 660 acres of shallow open water, salt marshes, sand spits, small wooded islands and dredged material disposal areas, home to vulnerable species including Piping Plover, least terns, owls, turtles, Northern Harrier, common loon, breeding osprey, and diamondback terrapin, Accabonac Harbor is a […]

From Those Who Knew Her … Several weeks ago, on the rainy side porch of Ashawagh Hall, I met with Patrice Dalton and Chris Ganitsch, Edwina Von Gal, Nick Bryan and Jeri Wellman to discuss Cile and how we might pay adequate homage to her memory. Visits to East Hampton are increasingly rare now that I live in the Berkshires, so I was delighted to be among beloved […]

Several people have asked me about the Dredge at Louse Point. The County is dredging the entrance to Accabonac Harbor. Ideally, the entrance has a depth of six feet. Periodic dredging is necessary to maintain the depth. The last dredge was in 2013 and over the past few years, the littoral current and storms have deposited sand, etc. as expected. The bottom is now quite flat.  Below is […]

September is a month filled with transitions. The days are shorter, the night sky is changing. Many hummingbirds have left on their challenging migration south. Egrets are congregating in Accabonac Harbor, in preparation for their migration. The winter resident chickadees, nuthatches and titmice are forming small mixed flocks, foraging at the edge of wooded areas and at feeders. It will be colder soon, but there maybe time for a few more swims in […]
