SHARKS: Chris Paparo
Shark Research Program of the South Fork Natural History Museum"- Long Island's coastal waters have an abundance of sharks, all of which we know very little about. In 2015, a small group of researchers were the first to deploy a satellite tag on a juvenile great white shark off Long Island’s south shore. Since that momentous occasion, the team has tagged over 30 additional great white sharks and has expanded their efforts to understand how other shark species utilize the waters of the south shore of Long Island. In this presentation, learn about the continued work of the Shark Research and Education Program of the South Fork Natural History Museum (SOFO).

Keeping Track of Otters on Long Island
Mike Bottini
Mike is a wildlife biologist with Seatuck Environmental Association whose study subjects include otters, coyotes and spotted turtles; author of several books (Trail Guide to the South Fork, Paddling East End Waters; The Walking Dunes: East Hampton’s Hidden Treasure; and outdoor columnist for the East Hampton Press.

Bruce Horwith
Bruce is a conservation biologist holding a Ph.D. from the University of Michigan and the owner of Wild Bird Crossing.
Bruce was that of Director of Preserves for the Nature Conservancy on Long Island from 1999 to 2010, Since 2010, Bruce has provided scientific expertise and project management to pond restoration, phragmites control, buffer planting near wetlands, dune ecology, and wildlife habitat restoration projects in his private practice.
Bruce has owned Wild Bird Crossing in Bridgehampton Commons since 1998.

Decreasing Nutrients and Contaminants: Promising Technologies
Christopher Gobler, PhD
Nutrients such as nitrogen as well as other contaminants, are entering both our underwater aquifer system, from which off our drinking water is drawn, as well as our surface water bodies, including Accabonac Harbor. The contaminants come largely from residential waste water systems;
Learn how new technologies are being developed to mitigate these effects.
Dr. Gobler is the Director of the Center for Clean Water Technologies at Stony Brook University. The Center was launched in 2015 in an effort to create a bridge between research institutions, regulatory agencies and the private sector. Dr. Gobler is also Professor within the School of Marine and Atmospheric Sciences (SOMAS) at Stony Brook University. He is widely recognized as a leading expert in the field of plankton ecology, specifically regarding the effect of excessive nitrogen loading's impact on the development of harmful algal blooms which have played a key role in the degradation of Long Island fisheries and water quality.

Alison Branco, PhD
Learn about the science of sea level rise with Dr. Branco with a local focus on Accabonac Harbor.
Dr. Branco is an Oceanographer specializing in assessing the human impacts on marine ecosystems. For six years, Dr. Branco served as the Director of the Peconic Estuary Program. She currently holds the position of Senior Coastal Scientist and Coastal Director of the Nature Conservancy in NY.
