We hope you’ll join us Saturday, April 23, to experience a PRFCT Earth Day. We are co-producing this special event with the Perfect Earth Project. Who is that, you ask? Here’s a prfct description (from their website — perfectearthproject.org): Founded in 2013, The Perfect Earth Project (PEP) is a rapidly expanding non-profit organization promoting toxin-free land management around the world. PEP operates from offices in East Hampton, […]
by Jorie Latham Thanks to our forward-thinking representatives in the state legislature, the Community Preservation Fund now can be extended to 2050 (it’s currently set to expire in 2030). Additionally, a portion of the funds collected with this 2% tax on real estate transfers can be used for specific water-quality projects. Senator Ken LaValle and Assemblyman Fred Thiele have presented Bill Number: S5324, which passed into law […]
by Chris Ganitsch There is good news on the water quality front! In our own backyard, the Cornell Cooperative Extension (CCE), in cooperation with the Town, has completed a nitrogen mitigation project in Pussy’s Pond, which drains directly into Accabonac Harbor. The best news? The permeable, reactive test mats, placed at scientifically determined groundwater flow areas, decreased nitrogen by 85%! An expanded but similar project, combined with […]
by Jorie Latham While it seems the world is shaken by more woe and worry every week, we are happy to be able to report some glad tidings in the Accabonac corner of it.The best news to come our way in a while is the strong evidence that nitrogen levels can be reduced with a fairly simple approach that was used in the recent project at Pussy’s […]
The star-filled night sky and the natural nocturnal landscape have been recognized as resources to be restored and protected in East Hampton, and the APC supports legislation that extinguishes unnecessary lighting and requires shielded light sources. Night lighting negatively impacts the natural ecology of Accabonac Harbor and its watershed, advancing algae growth and oxygen depletion in the Harbor and disrupting the natural cycles of many native animals. […]
IAPC is making plans for its third Images of Accabonac art show, scheduled for October 31 and November 1, 2015 at Ashawagh Hall in Springs. Renowned local artist Janet Jennings’ mixed media work, “accabonac storm” (above), was one entry in the impressive array of art displayed in 2014. We’ll be looking for more works inspired by accabonac for this year’s show. Watch our website and local papers […]
by Vay David We invite you to start spring by surfing APC’s website, in its newly launched version at accabonac.org. Come on in and explore it! And keep checking back for the latest news on our activities and events. You’ll find some great photos and extensive information about the organization and our efforts to protect the beauty and health of Accabonac Creek. We’ve gathered all of our […]
by Nicholas Bryan In our last issue, I wrote an article about nitrogen pollution in Accabonac Harbor, citing the negative effects of nitrogen on that magnificent body of water. Excessive nitrogen, introduced by our septic systems and surface runoff, overstimulates aquatic plants and algae and, in turn, uses up dissolved oxygen as plants decompose and block light to deeper waters. Unsightly algae scum (rife last summer on […]
by Margot Hardy If further justification is needed for APC’s work to restore the Barbara Barnes Hale Preserve to full-meadow status, it’s a recent reminder from the World Wildlife Fund of the importance of habitat, for food and reproduction, to the Monarch Butterfly. Years ago, you could sit on the ocean beach on a warm September day and marvel at the clouds of the brilliant orange creatures […]
You may have read the alarming story in January’s east Hampton star that informed us that our state is losing wildlife species at a frightening rate. Many of us already were aware that this was happening, but we had no idea how extreme the decline was or how soon we might see extinctions. According to The star, “186 mammals, birds, fish, shellfish, and amphibians were described as […]
