Septic Replacement Q&A December 2019
Accabonac Harbor is known for its beautiful scenery, bountiful shell fish, quiet recreation and it is a crucial habitat for many species – we love it as much as you do! But did you know your septic or cesspool is likely a major contributor to pollution in the harbor? The New York State Department of Environmental Conservation has listed Accabonac Harbor as impaired for shell fishing and stressed for public bathing due to pathogen loading. Pathogens and bacteria from septic systems significantly impact water quality and contribute to seasonal and year round shell harvesting closures throughout the harbor. Luckily, there is something you can do to help this.
The Town of East Hampton and Suffolk County are offering significant financial incentives that may cover the full cost of replacing your old cesspool or septic system with a new nitrogen reducing system that has been designed to limit the pollutants entering our groundwater by over 70% – can cleanser water means a healthier harbor.
The Accabonac Protection Committee and the Concened Citizens of Montauk are sponsoring a Septic Replacement Q&A meeting to help you get details on the available systems, pick up applications for the financial programs and have your questions answered through casual face to face conversations with East Hampton Town representatives.
