Mosquito Abatement Program
Town Trustee, John Aldred and APC board member, Glyn Vincent surveyed Accabonac Harbor for mosquito larvae this morning and Suffolk County Vector Control informed us that based on the survey results they would be sending out a helicopter between now and Thursday to do a limited drop of larvae control pellets (usually Methoprene and or BTI) on breeding hotspots along the western upper shore of Accabonac from the Merrill Lake Sanctuary to Kaplan Meadows.
This was the second survey of the season, and this will be the first helicopter treatment. The Mosquito Abatement Program, which has been in place since 2017 (an initiative of the Town Trustees, various East Hampton Town departments and local environmental organizations including APC) has reduced the amount of pesticide “sprayed” by more than 80% and reduced SCVC costs by over 75%.
If you are interested in volunteering to survey for the program, please let us know by contacting Glyn Vincent at glyndv@gmail.com.
