Earth Day 2023
Dear APC Members,
Earth Day 2023 is April 22nd. A relatively new holiday, it honors a belief that we can work with nature.
Wood Tick Island
The impetus was Rachel Carson’s book “Silent Spring”. She described a mythical town in which nature withered due to pesticides. It was frightening. Her knowledge of science and her ability to write to a general audience, got the message out. Notably, she preferred the word biocide to pesticide since pesticides killed many living things.
A bit later, the artist Joni Mitchell’s song “Big Yellow Taxi” described the tragic situation that was unfolding:
“Hey, farmer, farmer, Put away that DDT now, Give me spots on my apples, But leave me the birds and the bees, Please”.
And then there was the public service ad of the Native American canoeing. Trash tossed from a passing car lands near him, a tear runs down his face. “Some people have a deep abiding respect for the natural beauty that was once this country. And some people don’t”.
Earth Day is coming. Pesticides, herbicides, fungicides are still applied in enormous quantities and litter mars the beauty of our land. Some embrace the beauty of nature, they celebrate Earth Day every day. At APC we focus on Accabonac Harbor and things we can do to help nature. Things that are under our control.
.
Litter is a big issue and something we work on year round. APC adopted Pussy’s Pond Nature Preserve. We pick up trash there whenever we see it, all year round. We are allowed to do minor pruning and we were granted permission to plant a pollinator garden. The pollinator garden is starting to emerge this spring.
We also adopted Louse Point Road, Landing Lane and part of Gerard Drive under the East Hampton Town Highway Department adopt a road program. We pick up litter monthly all year round.
APC will host a beach clean up at Louse Point on May 20, 2023. Meet in the parking lot at 9 am.
Please visit our website to view the post card series “What You Do on Your Property Matters”. These are APC’s suggestions about decisions we make about our property that can help reduce pesticides, herbicides and other toxic chemicals on our properties.
